What's New, Scooby-Doo?
WB - Premiered 2002
Finally, a return to normalcy. Beginning in 2002, the WB began releasing new episodes of a series called What's New, Scooby-Doo? -
and it was a return to the classic format which had made the series popular so many years before. Scooby, Shaggy, Fred, Velma, and
Daphne are all back - still in their 1960's duds, but with new sensibilities. And therein lies the dilemma: in order to make the
show palatable for modern kids, the creators had to take the classic characters and update them: although they look the same, modern
slang falls from their lips (even though "Jinkies!" and the like are still used), and alt-rock music is used on the soundtrack,
often to replace the creepy, interstitial themes used to heighten tension in the original programs. Is it too much? Or just enough?
Were things fine just the way they were, or was it completely necessary to update a classic? This is a question each viewer is going
to have to ask himself. In any case, the new episodes look great, and are still animated the old-fashioned way. Both new and old
fans should be able to appreciate this.
Thankfully, older fans of the show can be glad of some familiar voices in the cast: Frank Welker, who originated the role of Fred,
returns to the character for this series. He also does the voice of Scooby (Don Messick having died in 1997). Casey Kasem also
returns as the original voice of Shaggy - who else? (Well, maybe Matthew Lillard.) Also, as the voice of Velma, we have Mindy Cohn,
beloved to pop-cultists everywhere as Natalie from the 1980's show The Facts of Life.
WNSD ran for three seasons, 14 episodes per season. Shows are available in a series of DVDs which offer four to
five episodes per package (sorry, no box sets of this series yet). Also, some episodes are currently being re-run on the Cartoon Network.
